The Current Biology Photomicrography Competition
نویسنده
چکیده
The retrogradely traced ganglion cells — cell bodies, dendrites and axons — are coloured in yellow. The arborization of the dendrites is clearly visible between the sparsely distributed axons in the centre of the image, whereas the cell bodies at the top left are covered by prominent axon bundles. The ganglion cells were labelled by sticking a crystal of DiI into the stump of the optic nerve after formaldehyde fixation. (Tissue preparation and retrograde tracing was done in collaboration with Andreas Aschoff.) A total of 64 confocal images of the retina were taken using a 40× objective. The images were pseudo-coloured, then volume-rendered using IMARIS software. Dr Zuschratter's prize is a Fujifilm MX-1700 digital camera.

The Olympus–Current Biology photomicrography competition This spectacular image of mitosis in a newt lung cell is the winning entry in the Olympus–Current Biology photomicrography competition. — using epithelial lung cells of the Northwestern rough skinned newt (Taricha granulosa). This cell is in late anaphase or early telophase of mitosis. Three fluorescent probes have been used to reveal dif...

No, it’s not a painting by Jackson Pollock but the winning entry in the Olympus–Current Biology photomicrography competition. This image of neurons from the rat cerebral cortex was produced by Ger Ramakers, at the Netherlands Institute for Brain Research, Amsterdam, using cultured 23-day fetal rat cerebral cortex. The image shows GABA-containing neurons (green) and an aspartate-containing neuro...

Toxicology Unit, UK, is a runner-up in this year's Current Biology photomicrography competition. It shows the normal relationship between Purkinje's neurons (red) and glial cells (green) in the rat cerebellum. Connections between the glial cells and the cell bodies, axons and dendrites of the Perkinje cells show that these interact closely. Two morphologically different types of green glial cel...

This image of a cell in early mitosis is the winner of the second prize in the recent Olympus–Current Biology photomicrography competition. It was produced by Alexey Khodjakov at the Wadsworth Center, Albany, New York using lung epithelial cells. This cell was fixed at the earliest stage of mitotic spindle formation, just as the nuclear envelope is dissolving and the clustered chromosomes (stai...

They are runners-up in the Current Biology photomicrography competition. During normal development of the nervous system in Drosophila, a process called 'lateral inhibition' ensures that only a single neural precursor is selected from a group of initially equipotent cells. Where lateral inhibition fails, excess neural cells develop, as shown in the image above, where a 'tuft' of thorn-like bris...
